Marilyn is extremely well organized and easy to partner with.

She worked with my department at the YWCA to develop a new website focused on current and past YWCA Women of Distinction. This event has touched hundreds of women in our community over the years, and we wanted a way to reconnect with them and honour their ongoing work. Not only did Marilyn help us generate this wonderful idea, once we decided it was feasible she immediately went to work! She provided detailed requests, explained the process of building and designing the site in lay terms; delivered the finished product precisely on time, AND empowered our staff to maintain and build the site moving forward. We work in a very busy environment (don’t we all?) and it was wonderful see a project that can often be frustrating and time consuming was executed with efficiency, creativity, good humour and with an understanding of the value (and limits) of staff time. My first online publishing experience began in 1997. At the beginning of my last year of studies at the University of Alberta, I was hired by a professor to convert his Romanticism textbook to an online version. I continued to work with him on the Orando Project funded by a SSHRC and other similar projects (e.g. Women Writers of the British Isles).

With the help of these publishing projects, I supported myself while working towards a Master of Publishing degree at SFU and working part-time for Chapters in Vancouver. I was then, and still am, passionate about publishing, especially online.

WHY?

At the end of my final term at the University of Alberta, I wrote a 17 page paper on Michael Ondaatje that was published by the Canadian Review of Canadian Literature, after I read every book he had written up to that time, including his numerous books of poetry. Up until then, I was struggling to understand the concept of post-modern literature. It wasn’t until I read Ondaatje’s Coming Through Slaughter that I truly understood the concept, at least from my point of view. It was like a light came on in my brain, a light I rekindle with every book of his I read.
